Laser hair removal can work for most everyone, for all skin colors and most hair types. For men, laser hair removal is great for permanently reducing chest and back hair for the cleaner, younger look you desire. For men who keep their heads bald by shaving, laser hair removal frees them from daily maintenance. Ingrown hairs and razor bumps in the beard area can be avoided by permanent hair reduction. For women, it’s a great alternative to creams and waxing for reducing hair on the face and body-including delicate areas around the lips and the bikini line.
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair shaft. Darker hairs respond best. Blond and gray hairs will not absorb the laser energy and cannot be treated. Laser hair removal is safe for darker skin types. The safest laser for laser hair removal in patients with darker skin is the 1064nm Nd:YAG. The 755nm Alexandrite laser is the gold standard for laser hair removal in patients with lighter skin types. Dr. Banks and her team use the Elite MPX revolutionary technology which sequentially combines gold standard wavelengths in one system: the 755 nm Alexandrite laser and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. Dr. Banks uses the Skintel Melanin Reader to quantitate the amount of melanin in your skin and choose the right laser for you.
How does it work?
To eliminate hair, the laser emits gentle pulses of energy that pass through the skin to the hair follicle. This energy is then absorbed into the hair follicle to destroy it so that is unlikely to grow there again.
Am I a viable candidate for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal can be applied to all areas of the body and on all types of skin (even tanned or dark skin).
Does it hurt?
The laser treatment causes only minimal discomfort. Patients often say it feels similar to the snap of a rubber band. Slight redness or localized swelling can occasionally occur, but this usually subsides within the first 24 hours after treatment.
How many laser hair treatments are required?
Typically patients will see results in 4 – 6 treatments, though this number will vary based upon skin tone, hair color and several other factors. Dr. Banks will talk to you about variables that may affect your individual results.
Are there any side effects?
You can expect redness at the treatment area and mild swelling.
Other side effects are rare and include blistering, bruising, prolonged redness, lightening or darkening of skin color.
