Liposuction: Where Does the Fat Go?

For many individuals seeking to remove unwanted weight in places that diet and exercise just won’t seem to reach, liposuction is an excellent choice. One of our clients’ most popular procedures, liposuction is known for redefining and reshaping the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. If you’ve been wanting to learn more about this highly effective procedure, you have come to the right place.

What Happens During a Liposuction Procedure?

We are proud to perform liposuction as an outpatient procedure in our office. When you meet with your doctor to discuss the surgery, she will outline all of the necessary preparations –

especially regarding medication and lifestyle adjustments – that should be made as you approach the day of your procedure.

During the surgery, your doctor will make incisions into the treatment area and insert the cannula–a thin, hollow tube used to suction out fat from the treatment area. Once the fat is removed, it is gone from your body for good.

Strict guidelines are in place to ensure that the fat is properly disposed of. While it is possible for fat from one area of the body to be injected into another area of the body, this has not yet been widely approved, and is not yet common practice.

What Happens After Surgery?

Once your procedure is complete, you will be advised to refrain from participating in any strenuous or aerobic activities and to rest for a minimum of one week. We also recommend our patients wear a compression garment for four weeks to achieve best results. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, you will also likely need to monitor side effects such as swelling and pain.

It is important to note that liposuction should not be used as a replacement for weight loss, but instead as a supplement to the weight loss you have already achieved through a commitment to a healthy diet and exercise. As a result, once you are fully recovered, it is necessary to maintain lifestyle practices that support an overall positive weight.
