What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction patients are among the happiest patients in plastic surgery. Women who have very large breasts may have difficulty finding bras that provide adequate support and clothes that fit properly. Large, heavy breasts can cause or exacerbate shoulder, neck and back pain. If you are experiencing any of these problems, you may be the perfect candidate for a breast reduction.

How Do I Know if a Breast Reduction is Right for Me?

Women that are being treated for chronic back or shoulder pain due to their large breasts may consider a breast reduction as part of their treatment. Breast reductions in this setting may be covered by your insurance.

During the consultation, we will talk about any symptoms you may be having due to your breast size. We will measure your breasts and talk about which technique of breast reduction would best serve your needs.

It’s important to remember that a breast reduction is different from a breast lift, which is a cosmetic procedure to make the breasts more perky and lift the nipples, in that it also removes significant weight and volume from the breasts. Depending on the size of your breast, and the type of breast reduction you need, it is possible to breast feed after a breast reduction. The breasts can grow again with subsequent pregnancies or weight gain, or in young women who are still going through puberty. It is generally recommended that your breast size and weight be stable before undergoing your reduction.

How is a Breast Reduction Performed?

There are two general types of breast reduction procedures: vertical pattern breast reduction and wise pattern breast reduction. There is less scarring with a vertical pattern breast reduction; however, the vertical pattern reduction is not as versatile as the wise pattern reduction when it comes to reducing very large breasts.

At the end of your consultation, we will estimate the weight of breast tissue that needs to be removed to get you to your desired cup size. Photographs will also be taken of your breasts and are often needed by your insurance company to guarantee coverage. It’s also nice to have your own breast reduction before and after pictures to see what a change this surgery has made for your body.

What Type of Post-Operative Breast Reduction Care Can I Expect?

The breast reduction procedure generally takes three to four hours, and you will be able to go home the same day. The post-operative pain is moderate, and you should expect to feel an improvement in your back and shoulders immediately. You will be given a prescription for pain medication to take in the first few days after your procedure. The down time for breast reduction surgery is typically one to two weeks.
