What is Delayed Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a procedure designed to restore a woman’s breasts after a mastectomy or related surgery, which is often required during breast cancer treatment. Patients may not pursue breast reconstruction immediately following their initial surgery for a number of reasons. Whether patients wait months or even years to pursue a breast reconstruction, they can still achieve beautiful results from the procedure. Delayed breast reconstruction is simply a breast reconstruction procedure that is performed at a later date than a patient’s initial mastectomy or lumpectomy.

How Much Does Delayed Breast Reconstruction Cost in Washington, D.C.?

Each breast reconstruction procedure requires a unique approach depending on the patient’s treatment goals. As such, the cost of this procedure can vary from patient to patient. However, since a breast reconstruction is generally performed following a mastectomy due to breast cancer, the procedure will be covered by your insurance. What are the Benefits of a Delayed Breast Reconstruction?

Patients typically pursue breast reconstruction procedures to restore their sense of wholeness. This eliminates the need for prostheses and allows you to feel more like yourself.  Additionally, breast reconstruction can improve nipple sensation and reduce scarring that remains from previous surgeries. Women who undergo breast reconstruction often experience an improved quality of life and a boost in confidence after their procedure.

How is a Delayed Breast Reconstruction Performed?

Breast reconstruction can be performed using several different techniques, depending on the patient’s treatment goals. We customize the treatment for each patient so that they can achieve the unique results that they desire. For most procedures, we use tissue from other areas of the body, such as the belly, thigh, or buttocks, to restore a natural volume to the breasts. Using a flap technique, we are able to take this tissue, which includes fat, muscle and blood vessels, and reconstruct the shape of the breast. Women who require a more significant increase in breast volume may also consider breast implants for a natural look and feel. We also reconstruct the nipple during the procedure. Breast reconstruction can be performed in one surgery or slowly over multiple office visits depending on your preference.

How Much Downtime Can I Expect After My Breast Reconstruction Treatment?

The recovery following a breast reconstruction treatment will largely depend on the techniques involved in your surgery. Recovery can last between a few weeks and a few months. During this time, you will need to take time off of work, exercise and other activities. In most cases, you will wear bandages for several weeks to encourage proper healing in the treatment area. You can also expect to have follow-up visits with Dr. Banks until you are fully recovered.
